SS Emperor was a Canadian lake freighter built at Collingwood, Ontario, in 1910–1911 and, at completion, the largest Canadian-built ship of its time. Designed chiefly to carry iron ore on the Great Lakes, she served for decades despite repeated accidents and mishaps. On her final voyage in 1947, after loading iron ore for Ohio, she ran aground on Canoe Rocks off Isle Royale, broke in two, and sank within minutes. Twelve crew members died and 21 were rescued by the United States Coast Guard Cutter Kimball. The wreck, now an archaeological site and popular dive wreck, is valued as an important remnant of Great Lakes industrial shipping.
