Rock Harbor Light, in Rock Harbor on Isle Royale in Lake Superior, was the island’s first lighthouse, built in 1856 as shipping increased on the lake. After Congress funded construction, the light began service that year but was extinguished in 1859 when mining traffic declined. It was renovated and reactivated in 1874 during a renewed copper-mining boom, then permanently deactivated in 1879 as copper prices fell and another Isle Royale light reduced its importance. Active for only eight years altogether, it is also notable for its stone-and-brick tower, attached keeper’s house, and a tilt that developed in the 1950s despite later stabilization work.
