SS Algoma was a Canadian Pacific passenger steamer built in Glasgow in 1883 for Great Lakes service between Thunder Bay and Owen Sound. Too long for the Welland Canal, she had to be cut in half, moved through on pontoons, and rejoined before entering service, later gaining electric lighting that likely made her among the first electrified vessels on the Great Lakes. In November 1885, while carrying cargo and 37 passengers, she was driven off course in a snowstorm and wrecked on Mott Island in Lake Superior. Fourteen survived and 46 died, the deadliest loss in Lake Superior shipping history. Her remaining wreckage preserves evidence of nineteenth-century travel and technology.
