Thunder Ridge Wilderness is a federally protected wilderness area in Jefferson National Forest near Natural Bridge, Virginia, encompassing 2,344 acres within the National Wilderness Preservation System. Shaped by Thunder Ridge, Arnold Valley, and the slopes rising to Apple Orchard Mountain, it is rugged, remote, and known for broad Blue Ridge Parkway views. Its granite and gneiss soils support unusually rich plant communities, including tall trees, laurel, rhododendron, and distinct forests across coves, crests, and dry slopes, while moist woods provide important salamander habitat. Around its edges survive traces of human history, from an early resort and summer camp to Cold War military installations and a 1928 balloon crash.
