In the late 1920s, the automobile became affordable for the "Forgotten Man," allowing middle-class American families to see the country without the expense of railroad travel. After Going-to-the-Sun Road was completed in 1932 and the Theodore Roosevelt Highway, now US-2, had been completed two years earlier, Glacier National Park began attracting a new kind of road-trip traveler, marking the end of an era of opulence and the beginning of affordable recreation. To serve motorists, the Many Glacier Road was extended one mile west from the Many Glacier Hotel, and the Great Northern Railway built the Swiftcurrent Auto Camp, with a campstore and 54 small, spartan cabins arranged in tepee configurations. Its setting was unobtrusive in the landscape, a significant departure from the park's earlier grand hotels. The camp quickly became popular with the middle class, and the rise of the automobile contributed to declining railway travel and increasing visitation by independent motorists.
