Around the turn of the century, U.S. Congressman Binger Hermann gave this tree to Douglas County. The exact occasion for the donation is not known, but research suggests it was presented at a dedication ceremony for the courthouse, which had been rebuilt after a fire on December 7, 1898. The tree has a circumference of 13 feet, 4 inches, a height of 71 feet, an average crown spread of 103 feet, and an approximate age of 105 years.
