Mary E. Myers led the effort to form the Lonaconing Furnace Park Association to preserve the Lonaconing Iron Furnace, now a historic landmark, and to establish the community park at this location. Revered and beloved as a public school teacher for thirty-six years, Miss Myers was born and lived in a home at this same location for more than ninety years and was personally quiet, yet forceful and frequently acclaimed as an activist in the civic and cultural affairs of Lonaconing and Allegany County. Mary and her sister Catherine donated their home and land to the Town of Lonaconing in 2007.
