Cobscook Bay State Park is an 888-acre public recreation area on Whiting Bay along the western shore of Cobscook Bay in eastern Maine. It is distinguished by one of the region’s dramatic tidal ranges, with water commonly rising about 24 feet and sometimes reaching 28 feet, reflected in a name derived from a Maliseet-Passamaquoddy word meaning boiling tides. Created in 1964 through a federal lease on land still part of the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, it has been managed by Maine’s Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. The park is used for camping, hiking, picnicking, boating, and birdwatching, with more than 200 bird species recorded there, including the American bald eagle.
