Mount Hitchcock is a one thousand two-foot mountain in the Holyoke Range of western Massachusetts, with its summit in South Hadley and its northern shoulder extending into Hadley. The Metacomet-Monadnock Trail crosses it, connecting it to the Seven Sisters and Mount Holyoke to the west and Bare Mountain to the east. Named for Amherst College geology professor Edward Hitchcock, who studied the range geologically and culturally, it was long thought to be South Hadley’s highest summit until later analysis showed nearby Bare Mountain is eight feet higher. Mount Hitchcock remains South Hadley’s second highest peak, while its northern shoulder is Hadley’s highest point.
