The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Landmark Memorial was completed in 2004 to honor his life, work, and civil rights activism. The largest of its kind in Florida and the southern parts of the United States, it embodies his fight for social justice, economic equity, and equality. In 1964, Dr. King received the Nobel Peace Prize for his dynamic leadership of the civil rights movement and steadfast commitment to achieving racial justice through nonviolent action. Its gold and black design reflects the colors of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., his fraternity at Boston University. In 1956, he received the Alpha Award of Honor for Christian leadership in the cause of first class citizenship for all mankind.
