In remote northern Maine, the Munsungan Lake, Chase Lake, and The Thoroughfare area preserves an important archaeological landscape with evidence of very early human activity after the retreat of Wisconsin glaciation glaciers. The district includes sources of chert, including red chert, that early inhabitants used for stone tools, and stone from this area has been found at sites across New England. More than 100 sites of interest have been identified in the wider region, with seven areas around The Thoroughfare showing use from the Paleoindian period to the Ceramic period. Major sites include the large Fluted Point habitation and workshop area and the smaller Windy Point workshop.
