Fort Mountain, in Baxter State Park in Maine’s North Woods, rises in Piscataquis County near North Brother and Mullen mountains and stands within the Penobscot River watershed. Its slopes drain by several streams into the river’s East and West branches. Though it has no official trail, a herd path reaches the summit from North Brother. The mountain is also remembered for a fatal wartime air crash: on June 20, 1944, a C-54-A cargo plane flying TWA Flight 277 from Newfoundland toward Washington was blown far off course, flew too low for Baxter’s high terrain, and struck the mountain, killing all seven people aboard.
