Two Bush Island Light stands on a remote island at the southwestern entrance to Penobscot Bay, marking the channel that bears the island’s name and remaining visible only by boat or from the air. Established in 1897 to provide a clearer aid to navigation along this exposed coast, it was staffed until 1964, when automation ended the resident keepers’ presence. Afterward, keepers at nearby Whitehead Light Station operated the fog signal and watched over the light. Later changes included the destruction of the keeper’s house in 1970, transfer to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1998, and conversion to solar power in 2000, while its navigational role endured.
