Whitehead Light, on Whitehead Island at the southwestern entrance to Penobscot Bay, is among Maine’s oldest light stations, established in 1804 and placed in service in 1807. Its present granite tower, built in 1852 and attributed to Alexander Parris, stands with a keeper’s house, oilhouse, and fog signal building added as the station evolved to meet coastal conditions. Authorized by President Thomas Jefferson and tended by generations of keepers and assistants, the station reflects two centuries of maritime labor and navigation. Automated in 1982, it later passed to Pine Island Camp, which restored parts of the property, while the light continues to serve as an active navigational aid.
