Established in 1791, Wellsburg was home to Brooke Academy, which began in 1778 and was incorporated in 1799. Joseph Doddridge, the author of "Frontier Notes," lived here, as did Patrick Gass, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and author of its "Journal."
