Tarantula Hill
Nature
Tarantula Hill is a 1,057-foot peak near the center of Conejo Valley in Thousand Oaks, California, rising on a 45-acre open-space property managed by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. Reached by a steep half-mile trail from West Gainsborough Road, it is a short but prominent local climb with sweeping 360-degree views of Conejo Valley, the Simi Hills, and the Santa Monica Mountains. The summit also holds a fenced water reservoir. Once a volcanic mound that went dormant about 16 million years ago, the hill later became a popular hang-gliding site and has been known by its current name since at least 1966.
