On February 3, 1787, on the field across the road, 23 New Braintree farmers joined Daniel Shays' rebels in an armed confrontation with the state militia. New Braintree was central to the larger rebellion of unpaid but heavily taxed revolutionary veterans, which led to the creation of the U. S. Constitution.
