Francis Parnell Murphy was born in this town on August 16, 1877, served as Governor of New Hampshire from 1937 to 1940, and gave this memorial in memory of his mother, Ellen Lambert Murphy, with the expressed wish that it serve as a community center for the town of Winchester, New Hampshire.
