David Vantine opened a store on this site in 1829, and the settlement became known as Vantine's Corners. When the first post office was established on June 26, 1849, with Mr. Vantine as postmaster, the name was changed to Clarence Centre. The present spelling was officially adopted on August 2, 1894.
