White Water Shaker Village contains the only standing brick Shaker Meeting House in the country. The village's first members lived in log cabins while they built the Meeting House, the community's first permanent structure, completed in 1827. Designed for Shaker worship, it uses a truss system in the attic that is an important example of Shaker innovation. Three large king posts suspended from the trusses support the attic and second floors, allowing the first floor to remain open without barriers or obstructions. This open first-floor space accommodated Shaker worship of praying, singing, and dancing.
