Completed in 1830, this small shop was designated as a workplace for the Shaker Brethren of the North Family in the celibate Shaker community. The Brethren may have made brooms here, and they may also have used the building to package garden seeds for sale. The Shakers are credited with being the first to sell garden seeds in small paper packages rather than in bulk, which was typical at the time. The White Water Shakers placed a variety of seed packets in wooden boxes and sold them on consignment in local general stores as far west as Missouri. During the late 1850s, they earned more than $5,000 annually from their seed business. Before White Water's packaged garden seed business ended in the 1870s, the Brethren may have crafted in this building the wooden boxes used to hold the seed packets.
