Kellogg's Grove, a historic grove and archaeological site near Kent in western Illinois, grew from a stopping place on the trail between Peoria and Prairie du Chien into a notable Black Hawk War battlefield. Oliver W. Kellogg settled there in 1827, and his cabin and barn became a wayside inn on the route to the Galena lead region. In June 1832 two skirmishes were fought there, including the war's last battle or skirmish in Illinois on June 25 under Major John Dement against Black Hawk's force. The site preserves memorial grounds, burials, traces of the old trail and cabin, and was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
