At Kelloggs Grove, a decisive battle of the Blackhawk War was fought on June 25, 1832, between the forces of the United States and the great Indian Chief Blackhawk. U.S. forces were commanded by Col. John Dement. Killed on the field of battle were 23 men, whose names as far as known were Benj. Scott, drummer boy; Ames, Private; S. Howard; Sublette; Wm Hale; J. Fowler; Crawford; A. Bond; Hallett; W. Allen; J. Black; A. Bradford; Meek; Savery; Floid; W.B. Makenson; M. Lovel; B. McDade, Cor'l; Aaron Halley; and P. St. Vrain, Ind. Agt.
