Kellogg's Grove, a 56-acre battlefield, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on June 23, 1978, by the State of Illinois and the United States Dept. of the Interior National Park Service. Most of the fighting took place from the cabins to two miles west, where Black Hawk had set up a “Custer-like” ambush. Abe Lincoln and militia men from Dixon came the next day in time to help bury Col. Dement's soldiers killed in combat.
