Established in 1871, Hayden's Ferry crossed the Salt River when it was a flowing stream and a barrier to travel, with the ferry held on course by a wire cable taut across the river. It was an important link in settling the Southwest. Charles Trumbull Hayden built and operated it, established the first flour mill in the Salt River Valley, and built La Casa Vieja in 1871 as the Hayden home.
