Great Point Light, officially Nantucket Light, stands at the northern tip of Nantucket Island, where Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sound currents meet, and has long served as an important navigational aid. First built as a wooden tower in 1784, it burned in 1816 and was replaced by a stone lighthouse in 1817. That tower guided mariners for more than 150 years until a storm toppled it in March 1984. Rebuilt in 1986 as a replica, the present lighthouse preserves the historic form while using modern protections against erosion and harsh coastal conditions. It remains an active beacon at this exposed edge of Nantucket.
