Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge
Nature
Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, is a nature preserve managed by the Trustees of Reservations. Spanning miles of beaches and including Great Point Light, it combines open shoreline with a historic lighthouse landscape. The refuge also contains the largest red cedar woodland in New England, an unusual feature in an area often associated with dunes and surf. Its protected status grew from a land acquisition in 1974 that established the foundation of the reservation. In recent years, the refuge has also gained attention for climate adaptation work, including managed retreat and other coastal responses to shoreline change.
