A Sound Garden is an outdoor public sculpture on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration campus in Seattle beside Warren G. Magnuson Park on Lake Washington. Designed and built by Douglas Hollis in 1982 and 1983, it consists of twelve twenty-one-foot steel towers topped with organ pipes and weather vanes that let shifting wind create soft tones. Its lakeside setting heightens both its visual impact and its motion and sound. The work became widely known as a public artwork and as the namesake of the Seattle rock band Soundgarden, and after singer Chris Cornell’s death in 2017 it also became an informal memorial site. Public access was later restricted, and by April 9, 2023, the campus, trails, and artworks were closed to visitors.
