Quartz Mountain, also called Baldy Point, is a granite peak in southwestern Oklahoma overlooking Lake Altus-Lugert and forming part of the western Wichita Mountains. Its rocks preserve a long geologic history, from early Cambrian granite emplacement through burial, uplift during the Pennsylvanian Ouachita Orogeny, and later erosion, leaving an exposed remnant of an ancient mountain system. Known especially for rock climbing, the mountain drew modern climbers beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with most routes established from 1978 to 1982. After decades of private access under Ted and Margaret Johnson, the area was preserved, donated to Oklahoma, and designated Quartz Mountain Nature Park in 2002.
