Lost Mine Peak is a 7,547-foot volcanic summit in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park and ranks third highest in the park, the range, and Brewster County. Though not among Texas’s very highest peaks, it is geographically remarkable as the easternmost place in the United States above 7,000 feet. Its steep rise above Pine and Juniper canyons, arid slopes draining to the Rio Grande watershed, and lower woodlands of juniper, oak, and piñon make it a striking natural landmark. Its name comes from a local legend of a sealed silver mine, and the popular Lost Mine Trail, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, helped make it one of the Chisos’ best-known peaks.
