In several versions of the legend, the mysterious death of Chocorua’s son while in the care of a settler named Campbell led the Pequawket chieftain, suspicious of the cause, to take revenge on the settler’s family, after which Campbell retaliated by killing Chocorua on the peak of the mountain that now bears his name.
