Whittier Bridge in West Ossipee, New Hampshire, spans the Bearcamp River at a crossing used for generations on an important east-west route first opened in the 1770s. Bridges stood here by 1792, and the current covered bridge was built in 1870 after flooding swept away its predecessor in 1869. It is one of New Hampshire’s few surviving 19th-century covered bridges and a rare example of a single-span Paddleford truss. Named for poet John Greenleaf Whittier, who summered nearby, the bridge was strengthened and altered over time, restored in 1983, moved aside in 2008, returned in 2022, and now serves pedestrians.
