Salamander Glacier is a small glacier in Glacier National Park, Montana, perched on a shelf along the Continental Divide at about 7,200 feet above sea level. Though only about 0.10 mile long, it extends roughly 0.75 mile wide. It was once part of the much larger Grinnell Glacier, but the two had separated before 1929 as the larger ice mass retreated. Salamander Glacier’s shrinking area reflects the wider loss of ice in the park: it covered about 57 acres in 1993 and 42 acres in 2005, representing a 23 percent reduction since 1966. It remains one of the park’s smaller named glaciers and a clear sign of long-term environmental change.
