Queen Wilhelmina State Park sits atop Rich Mountain in western Arkansas, where a railroad-built Victorian lodge opened in 1898 and quickly became known as the “Castle in the Sky.” Named for Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, the resort reflected the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad’s Dutch investment ties, but the original inn declined and closed in 1910 after the railroad’s financial troubles. Arkansas established the state park in 1957, reviving tourism at the site. A second lodge opened in 1963 using some original stonework, then burned in 1973 without loss of life. Its replacement opened in 1975, continuing the mountaintop destination’s long connection to travel, recreation, and preservation in the Ouachitas.
