Glass Beach near Fort Bragg on California’s north coast was created from decades of dumping along the shoreline, beginning with an official waterfront dump established in 1906. As earlier dump sites filled, disposal shifted northward until the final site, now most often identified as Glass Beach, closed in 1967. Over years of cleanup, biodegradable waste decayed and much metal and debris was removed, while the ocean broke discarded bottles and pottery into the rounded white, brown, and green sea glass that made the beach famous. Later added beside MacKerricher State Park, it remains a major attraction, though the remaining glass has steadily diminished.
