MacKerricher State Park preserves nine miles of varied Northern California coast north of Fort Bragg, including beaches, dunes, rocky headlands, wetlands, forest, and Lake Cleone. It is important wildlife habitat, with harbor seals, migrating gray whales, more than 90 bird species, endangered tidewater goby habitat, and most of the known range of the rare Mendocino spineflower. The coast also has a longer human history, including use by Pomo and Yuki peoples and the Mendocino Indian Reservation. Settled by Duncan and Jessie MacKerricher in 1864, the area later took their name, was shaped by logging rail and haul routes, and became a state park in 1949.
