Near this site, Asa Ransom made the first settlement in the Town of Clarence, and the second in Erie County, in 1799. It was also the birthplace of Harry B. Ransom, the first white male child on the Holland Purchase. In 1801, Joseph Ellicott opened the Holland Land Company office here at Ransom's Tavern.
