In 1993, Mike and Nancy Wyant united their community by establishing We Care Park, a local Christmas landmark on the Wyants' property along Market Street between Gano Street and Barkdol Street. Mike, who was born and raised in Kokomo, was inspired by his modest upbringing as one of 16 children to create the park to raise funds for the Christmas charity We Care, saying, "I don't want any child to go without Christmas." Mike and Nancy, joined by Mike's brothers Jim, Ralph, and Steve and by Mike's dear friend Tyler Willhite, spent summers and falls installing additional lights and decorations for the expansive display. The park became a walk-through and drive-through Christmas experience featuring thousands of lights and lighted displays, and on most evenings Mike and Nancy welcomed families into their heated garage for hot chocolate and invited children to choose a stuffed animal from under the Christmas tree. By the late 1990s, a typical evening brought a line of vehicles more than half a mile long, and what began as a north-end tradition grew into a statewide attraction highlighted on national television. Admission was always free, but donations accepted through 2020 raised nearly $1 million for the We Care charity.
