Chalybeate Springs was discovered in 1839 by brothers Reece and Robert Hughes of Alabama while they were looking for pirate gold. The springs took their name from the iron salts in the water. In 1847, Reece Hughes (1811-1893), a wealthy planter who later built an iron foundry, started the first town of Hughes Springs here.
