Silly Mountain is a low volcanic desert peak in the Superstition Mountains near Apache Junction and Gold Canyon, rising 2,139 feet and now forming the center of Silly Mountain Park. Once called King’s Mountain for local rancher and businessman William N. King, it took on its present name after Silly Mountain Road was named in the 1970s. Its rhyolite, dacite, and tuff reflect a high-silica volcanic history, and an old gold-prospecting mine on its flank never yielded valuable metals. The mountain also preserves rich Sonoran Desert habitat, and after severe damage from fires and off-road use, restoration beginning in 2007 turned it into a managed recreational area with trails and a botanical walk.
