The Apache Trail began as a route created by Native American tribes traveling between their summer homes in the mountains and winter homes in the desert. In 1905, it became a roadway used to haul supplies to the construction site of Roosevelt Dam. The Southern Pacific Railway later renamed the road "Apache Trail" and promoted it as a scenic side trip for travelers.
