Grant, Alabama, stands atop Gunter Mountain at 1310 feet of elevation, surrounded by the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and overlooking Historic Kennamer Cove. A post office was established there on May 18, 1887, and early settlers named the town Grant for Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. The town also overlooks Cathedral Caverns State Park, a major attraction in Northeast Alabama whose Cathedral cave has the largest natural opening of any cave in America. Cherokee Indians lived in this cave long before other settlers arrived.
