Derosier's Market, the oldest continually run business in Freeport, opened in 1904 as a grocery store and has been operated by the same family ever since. In 1890, Augustus Derosier, his wife Delia, and their first born son Philip emigrated from the Gaspe Peninsula of the Province of Quebec to Freeport, where Augustus found work in the railroad industry. Even while earning a reported one dollar per day, he saved enough to buy this building on Main Street and open the store. The business then passed from Augustus to his son Philip, then to Philip's daughter Alice Wagner, and eventually to her son Richard. In 2001, Richard Wagner turned ownership over to his son Phil Wagner, the fifth generation of the family to own Derosier's. Phil led the store into its second century and continues to run it as a Freeport institution. Augustus Derosier also built several houses, including his own home, on Royal Avenue. As American shopping and eating habits changed over the last century, Derosier's adapted and now devotes most of its operations to take-out food and beverages rather than groceries.
