Sand to Snow National Monument in Southern California, created on February 12, 2016, spans desert basins, mountain forests, and alpine heights from the Coachella Valley floor to the San Bernardino Mountains. Covering 154,000 acres, including more than 100,000 acres within the San Gorgonio Wilderness, it links Joshua Tree National Park, the Bighorn Mountain Wilderness, and the San Bernardino National Forest in a major wildlife corridor. The monument contains the headwaters of several rivers, part of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, and exceptionally varied habitats with more than 1,600 native plant species. Its protection grew from decades of land acquisitions and conservation work.
