The village of Hero was originally located on the land at this site and, though now identified only by a dot on most county maps, retains a historical identity through its association with Jesse Taylor, in whose honor it was named. Within sight of Hero are the grave and nearby birthplace of Jesse Taylor, the first soldier from Greene County, Pennsylvania, to die in action in the Civil War. A monument honoring him was erected in the nearby village of Jollytown in 1892. North of Hero, at the head of Bland's Run, are the cemetery and former site of Gilmore Township's first church, now known as Old Mount Tabor, built in 1818. Also north of Hero is the Taylor Cemetery, where Jesse's grandfather, Revolutionary War soldier John Taylor, was buried, along with Jesse Taylor, his brother Thomas, and his brother-in-law John T. Pogue, all three Civil War soldiers of Company F, 7th Regiment West Virginia Volunteers. The land was originally called Hubely's Delight and was purchased by John Taylor Sr. in 1806. GAR Post No. 450 and Hero Road were named in Jesse's honor, and a large monument in Mount Morris, Pennsylvania, also honors Jesse and his comrades of Company F, 7th West Virginia Volunteers.
