Gen. Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel

General Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel (1809-62) assisted in the Union defense of Cincinnati during the Civil War, and Fort Mitchell, one of seven forts erected around the city, was named for him. Born in Kentucky, he graduated from West Point and served in the Mexican War. A noted astronomer, he founded the Cincinnati Observatory and later became director of the Dudley Observatory in New York. He died of yellow fever while in the service.
