Recognition of the fallen soldier began during the Civil War in the 1860s as a way to identify the place on a battlefield where a soldier was killed in combat. In later wars, the practice evolved into a sign of remembrance and respect. The steel helmet symbolizes that the battle is over for the fallen soldier. The inverted rifle with its bayonet in the ground signifies that the soldier died in battle, fighting to the end. The worn, dirty boots carried the soldier through the battle and represent the final march of the soldier's last battle. Identification tags establish the identity of the brave soldier, whose name and sacrifice will never be forgotten. The Battlefield Cross recognizes and honors the fallen soldier, signifies a time for prayer, and serves as an unforgettable reminder that freedom is not free. Bronze plaques around the outside border of the circle honor soldiers from Jackson County who were killed in combat for our freedoms.
