Jack Hayes (1882-1961) served as principal of Ouachita Parish High School for forty-one years, from 1908 to 1949, and was beloved and respected by thousands of students who came under his leadership. Regarded as one of Louisiana's outstanding educators, he upheld high standards of excellence and led students and teachers by firm example and hopeful expectations. Under his administration, the school provided broad opportunities for the full development of students' potential as learners and good citizens. He had an unusual ability to know students individually and show concern for each, demanding their best while offering encouragement, compassion, and friendly counsel. He was also remembered for contributions to the community through his service club, his church, and other organizations, and the progress of Northeast Louisiana University since 1931 recalled his work with others in instigating a drive to establish its forerunner, Ouachita Junior College. Ann Stapp Hayes (1885-1972), his wife and devoted companion, was a loyal supporter of Ouachita Parish High School who, as head librarian for many years, encouraged academic achievement and pride in perfection, and worked untiringly to promote quality education and the success of the school and its students.
