Beartooth Butte is a 10,518-foot mountain in Wyoming's Beartooth Mountains, within the Absaroka–Beartooth Wilderness of Shoshone National Forest. Rising more than 1,500 feet above Beartooth Lake and plainly visible from the Beartooth Highway, it stands out not only for its shape but for its unusual geology. While much of the surrounding range is granitic, the butte is composed mostly of sedimentary rocks. It holds the most easily accessible exposures of the Beartooth Butte Formation, whose fossils date to the Devonian period, making the mountain an important geologic site as well as a striking landmark.
