Mount Rearguard is one of the taller summits in Montana’s Beartooth Mountains, rising 12,209 feet within the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness of Custer National Forest. At the western edge of the Hellroaring Plateau, it stands in a rugged alpine landscape of rock and open high-country terrain. A small remnant glacier just east of the peak adds to the area’s stark glaciated character. The mountain is part of a protected wilderness known for its remote and severe mountain setting.
